The Future of Learning
ManyWorlds

02/04/2004

02/04/2004
This special executive briefing contains highlights of the research that ManyWorlds began almost two years ago in an area we term 'Real-Time Learning.' Although much management attention in recent years has been devoted to more transaction oriented processes, ManyWorlds sees the next cycle of value creation originating from less ‘tangible’ processes such as research & development, sales and marketing and collaboration over the extended enterprise.

In the rush to make real-time systems that deliver tremendous amounts of data, businesses need to remember that employees are the edge that needs to be kept sharp. And employees do not learn like systems do. The essence of Real-Time Learning then is to embed learning into everyday work, in a seamless and non-intrusive way. In this way the enterprises strategic priorities will drive the learning that takes place at individual, team and departmental levels, leading to an increase in organizational competence and bottom line performance.

Many of the concepts in Real-Time Learning will seem familiar but in this case, the whole is more than the sum of the parts. Written in simple to understand language, the paper details some of the challenges to embedding learning in an organizational environment, maps out a simplified scenario of how Real-Time Learning works, and makes suggestions for steps that enterprises can take on the path towards a supportive, seamless and integrative environment that drives performance.
